Georg Weise

Georg Weise, born in 1973 in Berlin and raised in Mecklenburg, began establishing himself in the Berlin art scene in the 1990s. From 1998 to 2003, he studied painting at the Berlin University of the Arts under Wolfgang Peuker and Werner Liebmann. Despite extensive study trips to Mexico and Southeast Asia, Georg Weise has lived and worked in Berlin since 1991. Since 1989, the Berlin-based artist has created a unique body of work consisting of paintings, drawings, and sculptures, with over 80 exhibitions worldwide.

Georg Weise found his artistic subject early on: His early self-portraits marked the beginning of a series of sensitive portraits of boys and young men, who reveal their souls against mystical landscape backgrounds—environments that gradually became more abstract over time. Often inspired by the Mecklenburg landscapes of his childhood, Weise subtly merges the inner landscape of the boys' souls with the magical allure of his imaginary outer worlds. By perfecting his techniques, he crystallizes moments in which his vision of beauty aligns with that of the viewer.

"Art should increase mysteries. There was a time when I perceived the appearances of the world as enchanted. Those were probably the moments when I felt something for the first time. With art, I can make someone feel something for the first time and allow others to see through my eyes. It is about that magic." – Georg Weise

At first glance, strongly influenced by Romanticism, Weise's works also reflect the imperfect world that surrounds both the artist and the viewer. Boris Nitzsche describes his works as "unconditionally romantic," but without indulging in a nostalgic play with quotations. Instead, Weise takes Romanticism seriously, addressing longing and loss in a painfully tangible way, without hoping for external redemption.

Georg Weise does not create paradisiacal worlds but, with great sensitivity, also reveals the darker sides, marked by the often brutal traces of reality. In his search for an unattainable harmony between the incompatible—the fragile grace of his boy portraits and the threatening outer worlds—he develops his aesthetic program. This is determined by deceleration and concentration, which pair with the fragile beauty of his figures and backgrounds, challenging the viewer to engage in dialogue with their own state of being and position in and toward the world.

Georg Weise's aesthetic reaches its perfection in the imagination of the viewer—this is the secret of his art.
